Early 19th C. American or English gold leaf, applied ornament frame

This frame has a rounded sight edge with a broad shallow ogee profile adorned with curling leaves tendrils and C-scrolls surrounding small circular motifs. The large extended corners have curling leaves with a center medallion surrounded by entwined straps and C-scrolls. This frame style is sometimes referred to as a Cole frame after the American artist Thomas Cole who preferred this style on his paintings. Original gold leaf. The frame originally had a liner which is missing.
